Peter Skene Ogden papers [manuscript], circa 1820-1867.

The collection contains Peter Skene Ogden's journals from 1825-1828 as well as correspondence, Ogden family genealogy (1640-1906), and estate documents. Typescript correspondence includes letters to and from his daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Archibald Isaac McKinlay; Governor-in-Chief of Rupert's Land, Sir George Simpson; Governor of the Oregon Territory, George Abernethy; Thomas Lowe; and Henry I. Warre. Documents include originals, photographs, and typescripts of ledger pages, shipping documents, Hudson's Bay Company business, and Peter Skene Ogden's estate disbursements. Included is a certificate appointing Peter Skene Ogden as Chief Trader of the Hudson's Bay Company on May 3, 1824, and a transcript of a December 31, 1847 letter to Reverend E. Walker describing Ogden's efforts to rescue the survivors of what became known as the Whitman massacre. The journals include transcripts of Ogden's 1825-1826 journals (November 21, 1825 to July 18, 1826), microfilm prints of fragments of journals (1825-1827), and transcripts and typescripts of journals from August 1827 to February 1828. Transcripts were copied from originals stored at Hudson Bay House in London. Portions of the journals were published in the Oregon Historical Quarterly, volume 10 (1909) and volume 11 (1910).

George Abernethy was born in New York City on October 7, 1807. He married Anne Cope in 1830 and accompanied Reverend Jason Lee to Oregon in 1840, where he was placed in charge of the mission store at Willamette Falls. Abernethy encouraged lumbering and fisheries and established commercial connections with the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands, California and the Atlantic coast.
